Bootz & Duke Signs has been helping Arizona businesses stand out for more than six decades. What began as a small, hand-painted sign shop has grown into one of the state’s most trusted full-service signage manufacturers. Today, Bootz & Duke remains a family-owned and operated, fourth-generation Arizona business committed to craftsmanship, reliability, and the same personal service that defined our early days.
Our Story: From Hand Lettering to High-Performance Signage
In 1964, longtime sign craftsmen Charlie Bootz and Jim Duke left Myers Leiber Sign Company to start something of their own. They named their new company Bootz & Duke Sign Company. They began modestly, creating hand-lettered and painted signs in a small Phoenix shop. But their attention to detail and pride in every project quickly set them apart.
As their reputation grew, so did their capabilities. By the mid-1970s, Bootz & Duke had become a full-service sign company serving businesses throughout Arizona.
Passing the Torch: The Next Generation of Leadership
In 1975, Bill Gibson, Charlie Bootz’s son-in-law, joined the company as a young installer, quickly proving himself through hard work and initiative. A year later, Charlie’s son Jeff Bootz, an ASU graduate, also joined the team.
When co-founder Jim Duke retired in 1978, the Bootz family purchased his share, ensuring the company’s legacy would stay family-run. Over the next decade, Charlie, Nellie, Jeff, and Bill continued expanding operations and modernizing production while staying true to their roots in quality and service.
By 1991, Charlie and Nellie retired, and leadership transitioned to Jeff Bootz as President and Bill Gibson as Vice President. This marked a new era of growth for Bootz & Duke Signs.
The End of One Era and the Start of Another
In 1997, Bill’s sons Charlie and Andy Gibson joined the family business, learning the trade from the ground up. Charlie was in fabrication and Andy was in installation. When Jeff Bootz stepped down in 2006, Bill and his wife Cindy Gibson became owners of Bootz & Duke Sign Company, carrying forward the values that built the company’s reputation.
Under their leadership, the company grew rapidly, eventually moving into a larger Phoenix facility in 2018 to meet increasing demand and expand production capacity.
What began with paint and brushes has evolved into a state-of-the-art operation capable of producing large-scale illuminated signage, digital displays, and precision-fabricated architectural signage for some of Arizona’s most recognizable businesses.
